Prof Anagha Paranjape-Purohit participated in the workshop on Solid Waste Management in Pune – E-waste. This workshop is a part of a series of workshops organized by Pune Municipal Corporation and UNEP IETC. The workshop was hosted at PMC Main Building in Capt Vadke Hall at 2:00 pm. These workshops are targeted to include all stakeholders so that there is a participatory approach towards evolving a plan for solid waste management in Pune.
This workshop on e-waste management focused on the issue of growth of IT sector in Pune. The presentations included a talk by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) who has recently conducted a study on estimating e-waste in Maharashtra. This was followed by stakeholders discussing the issue of informal recycling sector in Pune and the hazards of manual e-waste recycling. This was followed by a presentation by a technology provider, INFROTEK, who are developing a recycling plant at Taloja which will recycle about 25% of Mumbai’s e-waste. Currently there are no plans for Pune’s e-waste recycling.

Election of BNCA Professors to the Committee of Energy and Environment of Promoters and Builders Association of Pune (PBAP)
Report on the General Body Meeting and discussions for this position
Promoters and Builders Association of Pune (PBAP) is a consortium of Builders and Developers in Pune, with a strength of about 150 members operating their businesses in the larger Pune metropolitan area, including Pimpri-Chinchwad and such fringe areas.
This body has various committees formed under its umbrella to promote and provide assistance to its members at various levels and in different new and emerging arenas of development. One such committee is Energy and Environment, headed by Mr. Sanjay Deshpande. Although memberships to these committees were restricted to PBAP members, PBAP has granted permission to the Energy and Environment Committee to take on board experts in the area of Eco Housing and Environmental Planning.
With this as the background, PBAP chose to invite Prof Poorva Keskar and Prof Anagha Paranjape-Purohit to its Committee for Energy and Environment. A General Body meeting was conducted on March 24, 2007 where approval for the two invitee members was granted.

Second Interaction with Swedish Delegation on

In March 2006, a Swedish Delegation visited Pune to assess the proposal for a Sustainable City Programme for Pune. Dr B N College of Architecture (BNCA), under the banner of PRAAKRUTEE 2006, presented to the delegation the designs for Environmental Hubs, developed by the six architectural colleges in Pune. Under this interaction organized by BNCA, chief architect Mr Ulf Ranhagen presented his work on the Stockholm Eco Housing Programme. At this time, Mr Ranhagen, his colleagues of the delegation and Pune Municipal Corporation authorities visited BNCA and interacted with the faculty and staff on developing a sustainable city programme for Pune.
As a follow up to this first delegation visit, Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) organized a second delegation to Pune to take forward the formulation of Terms of Reference for funding for the Sustainable City Programme for Pune. Planner Mr Hans Hede and SIDA India programme manager Mrs Yasmin Zaveri Roy visited BNCA to meet and interact with the faculty. Mr Dinesh Girolla of Pune Municipal Corporation accompanied the delegation and interacted with BNCA staff.
Prof Poorva Keskar, Prof Anagha Paranjape-Purohit, Prof Shubhada Kamlapurkar, Prof Asmita Divekar and Prof Shilpa Hapse interacted with this delegation, providing them inputs regarding the post graduate programmes and other academic and research activities that are undertaken by Centre for Environmental Planning and Architecture (CEPA) under the banner of BNCA.
The delegation looked at the possibility of developing BNCA’s education infrastrcuture as a platform for academic discussions on Urban Strategic Planning and furthering research and awareness for the Sustainable City Programme for Pune. BNCA’s post graduate courses were looked upon as a potential mechanism to conduct local research and analyses.

Screening of ‘Troubled Waters’ – a film on coral reef of Lakshadweep

To celebrate World Water Day falling on March 22, CEPA organized screening of a film titled ‘Troubled Waters’. Set totally underwater, this film showcased the coral reefs of Lakshadweep in the Indian Ocean. The amazing biodiversity of oceanic life in these coral reefs is threatened today due to global temperature rises and rising ocean waters. This film, directed by Sumer Verma and narrated by Naseeruddin Shah, is first of its kind in India, which focuses on the environmental issues of the region.
On Saturday 24, March 2007, the opening and introduction to the film was presented by Prof Anagha Paranjape-Purohit. The guest of honor for this event was Mr Vivek Kharwadkar, Development Engineer Water Supply Department in Pune Municipal Corporation. Some other prominent guests like Mr Sanjay Deshpande of Sanjeevani Developers, Pune and Mr Sarvesh Javdekar of Vilas Javdekar and Associates, Pune attended the event. Additionally, BNCA Principal Mr Anurag Kashyap and Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha Committee member Mr Bedasgaonkar graced the occasion. Prof Poorva Keskar hosted the event and moderated the discussions and interactions for this event.
After the screening of the film, Mr Vivek Kharwadkar spoke briefly about the water supply situation in Pune, followed by an Open House where students and other professionals interacted with Mr Kharwadkar. This discussion was very informative as Mr Kharwadkar fielded numerous questions about Pune’s Water supply, treatment and distribution network and proposed projects to improve the situation in Pune.
Students were greatly benefited by this interaction and first hand information about how the Pune Municipal Corporation operates and maintains its water supply was understood.
Lastly, Mr Kharwadkar also promised periodic interactions with the post graduate students to enable them to take up specific and focused research proposals that may contribute towards making proposal to improve water supply distribution in Pune.

Seminar on Fly Ash as a Building Material by Mr. Mukund Joshi, DIRK India Ltd, Nashik
Mr Mukund Joshi of DIRK, India Ltd presented an informative seminar to the students of M.Arch (Environmental Architecture) on Fly Ash as a building material. Mr Mukund Joshi, a civil engineer and a concrete technologist by profession, has had extensive experience with cement and concrete technologies. His research has now extended to include fly ash as a cement additive to enhance the basic qualities of concrete.
This Saturday Seminar event was kept open to the Post Graduate students of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Architecture and other interested students and professionals. Mr Joshi’s lecture was a tru turning point for understanding fly ash as a additive material and its inseparable relationship with cement in formation of durable concrete.
His lecture threw light on the aspects of chemical reactions involved in making of concrete and its limitations. He highlighted how addition of fly ash often tackles the limitation of reactions in making of concrete, thereby enhancing the durability property of concrete.
Students found the interactions with Mr Joshi highly interesting and expressed their appreciation for the fact that complex chemical reactions were simplified in the lecture, giving more insight into the cement concrete mechanism. Environmental benefits of using fly ash were also highlighted by this lecture.

Post Graduate Students’ Interaction for Design and Planning
Dr B N College of Architecture (BNCA) and Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Architecture (BVCOA) both conduct post graduate courses in Architecture. Although affiliated to two separate Universities, both the courses offer specialization in Environmental and Sustainable Architecture in Pune. Currently a total of 17 students are working towards understanding and designing projects that showcase environmental sensitivity and conducting research that will enhance the environmental benefits of architectural development.
With the initiation of Prof Poorva Keskar, BNCA, a dialogue was started between the students and faculty of these two courses. A First such interaction was hosted at BVCOA on Friday, March 9, 2007. At this interaction, a merit design of Ar. Prasad Patil, a student of BVCOA was presented to the audience. The focus of this design was on resolving the acoustic and aqueous conditions prevailing on the design site. The proposed design was located in Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The second part of the interaction saw presentation by students of BNCA titled ‘Perspective, Proposals and Thoughts on Paud Phata – Balbharati Link Road Project in Pune’. This was an Environmental Planning exercise that the students had conducted in their academic semester. This presentation looked at understanding the viewpoints, benefits and costs of building the proposed and much controversial road project in Pune.
